Sweden Announces Historic Gripen Fighter Jet Package for Ukraine

Sweden Deepens Its Commitment to Ukraine’s Defense

Sweden has announced one of its largest and most strategically significant military support packages for Ukraine to date; a comprehensive SEK 25.2 billion package centered around strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, long-range capabilities and electronic warfare systems.

At the heart of the announcement is Sweden’s decision to move forward with the sale of up to 20 Gripen E/F fighter aircraft to Ukraine, while simultaneously donating up to 16 JAS 39 Gripen C/D aircraft from the Swedish Air Force’s existing fleet.

The announcement marks a major milestone in Ukraine’s growing air capabilities and signals Sweden’s increasingly long-term strategic commitment to Ukrainian victory and European security.

What Sweden Is Sending

Under the agreement, Ukraine has announced its intention to purchase up to 20 modern Gripen E/F fighter aircraft following a Letter of Intent signed between Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in October 2025.

In addition, Sweden will donate up to 16 Gripen C/D aircraft from its current fleet, together with advanced air-to-air weaponry and support systems.

The support package reportedly includes advanced missiles such as:

  • IRIS-T
  • AMRAAM
  • METEOR long-range air-to-air missiles

The inclusion of the METEOR missile is particularly notable. Widely considered one of the most advanced air-to-air missiles currently in service, it significantly increases Ukraine’s ability to engage aerial threats at extended ranges.

Sweden also confirmed that Ukrainian pilot and personnel training can begin already this year, while the first donated Gripens could reportedly begin defending Ukrainian airspace as early as next year.

Why The Gripen Matters

The Gripen fighter jet has long been viewed as one of the aircraft best suited for Ukraine’s battlefield realities.

Unlike many Western fighter platforms that require extensive infrastructure and maintenance chains, the Gripen was specifically designed for dispersed operations, quick turnaround times and survival in contested environments.

In practical terms, that means the aircraft is well adapted for the exact type of high-threat conditions Ukraine faces daily under relentless russian missile and drone attacks.

The package also includes:

  • Procurement of advanced artillery ammunition
  • Electromagnetic warfare systems
  • Support for Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities
  • Innovation partnerships with Ukrainian defense industries
  • Civil defense and medical preparedness support
  • Swedish defense research cooperation on unmanned systems and battlefield technologies

This is not symbolic aid.

This is long-term strategic defense cooperation.

“Ukraine Is Also Defending Sweden’s Freedom”

One sentence in Sweden’s announcement stood out above all others:

“Ukraine is also defending Sweden’s freedom.”

It is a statement many leaders across Europe increasingly understand, but still too few are willing to openly say.

Because Ukraine is no longer simply fighting for its own survival.

Ukraine is holding the line against an imperialist terrorist state whose aggression, war crimes and destabilization efforts extend far beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Every missile intercepted over Kyiv.
Every drone shot down over Odesa.
Every frontline position defended in Donetsk.

All of it contributes to the security architecture of Europe itself.

Tack Söta bror – my take

What Sweden understands, and what some Western leaders still dangerously underestimate, is that this war was never going to stop at “just Ukraine.”

The cost of helping Ukraine has always been framed as expensive.

But what is the price of allowing an aggressive nuclear state to normalize mass terror against civilians, deportation of children, attacks on hospitals, torture of prisoners of war and open threats against Europe without consequence?

Because that is the real question history will ask.

Sweden proves something many larger countries still struggle with:

You do not need to be the biggest country in the world to lead morally, strategically & politically!
You simply need the willingness to understand what is truly at stake.

The cost of stopping russia is high.
But the cost of failing to stop russia will be infinitely higher for all of Europe.

History will remember who understood the danger in time.
And today, Sweden once again showed that they do. 🇸🇪🇺🇦
